A rare, evergreen species of Oak native to northern parts of Mexico, Quercus rhysophylla has bold, larger (up to 25 cm long), shiny-green leaves, shaped like those of a laurel but lighter in texture.
The new growth in spring is a beautiful, rich-purple before darkening to green as it ages. Late flushes of young growth in July / August may also be the same, vivid purple colour.
Quercus rhysophylla is an unusual and colourful garden tree growing best in a position sheltered from strong winds!
