Description
A very rare, purple leaved form! This splendid tree has rich-purple leaves which can be up to 70 - 90 cm long on an established plant. These leaves are wonderfully aromatic when crushed. The vivid purple leaves are eye-catching and make Juglans regia 'Purpurea' a much sought after, specimen garden tree!

Position: Full sun.

Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.

Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Juglans regia 'Purpurea' appreciates shelter from cold winter winds.

Rate of Growth: Slow until established, then moderate.

Habit: Eventually a small tree with a branching, open habit.

Height: 10 m (32 ft).

Spread: 8 m (26 ft).

Notes: This plant is grown for its beautiful, ornamental leaves and does not produce edible walnuts. We have a specimen of Juglans regia 'Purpurea', planted in the woodland garden surrounding our nursery. At 12 years old, it had reached a height of 3 m, a spread of 2.5 m and is shown in the photos below.
