Description

Late flowering female cultivar, Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' has dark green leaves and masses of vivid red berries in autumn which are very ornamental and popular with birds. Initially, the colourful fruit stand out well against the green foliage and then continue to stay on the branches as the leaves start to fall.

Pollinated by the male Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman'.

Several established plants in a border will give a fantastic display of colour in autumn! Particularly effective is a mixture of red and gold berries female hollies pollinated by a single male.

• Soil: Moist, lime-free fertile soil.

• Important: Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' requires a nearby male Ilex verticillata for pollination. Without one, it will not produce any berries.
