This superb purple-leaved tree was discovered in the famous Trompenburg Arboretum, Rotterdam, Holland which incidentally should be on the itinerary of all plant lovers passing through this major port.
From this wonderful collection of trees, a seedling of Fagus sylvatica 'Rohanii' was found to have particularly lustrous, deep purple, slightly feathered leaves, delineated with a faint silver margin. This seedling was named Fagus sylvatica 'Rohan Trompenburg' and although slow growing for the first year or two, eventually this cultivar will grow into a majestic tree!
