Description

A very rare and beautiful tree which is native to parts of China and was first introduced in 1907 by Ernest H Wilson. Emmenopterys henryi is decideous with mid green leaves on red stalks and breathtaking, large clusters of creamy-white, fragrant flowers which are surrounded by white 'bracts' similar to those of a Schizophragma.

These flowers are usually only found on mature plants (over 30 years old), although there is a documented case of flowers appearing on a specimen as young as 6 years old. A fantastic plant, although getting it to flower is a long lasting challenge!

• Position: Sheltered in sun or light shade.
• Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil.
• Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Emmenopterys henryi will do grow best in a warm, sheltered garden protected from cold winter winds..
• Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
• Habit: Emmenopterys henryi eventually grows to be a small branching tree.

• Notes: The first tree in Britain to flower was in 1987 at Wakehurst Place and was more than 75 years old.
