Description
An unusual selection,
Arbutus 'Marina' is evergreen and has large, glossy leaves (much larger than those of a
Arbutus unedo) and racemes of creamy white flowers in autumn, followed by colourful strawberry-like fruit. Established specimens develop ornamental, peeling, mahogany coloured bark.
Features
- Common name: Strawberry Tree.
- Position: Full sun.
- Soil: Any well drained, fertile soil. Arbutus are reasonably tolerant of chalky soils but will grow better in slightly acidic conditions.
- Hardiness: Hardy. This plant is wind tolerant in coastal areas but prefers some shelter from the wind in cold gardens.
- Flowering Period: September - November.
- Flower Colour: White flushed with pink
- Rate of Growth: Moderate.
- Habit: Eventually a small branching tree with a densely branching, rounded crown. A slightly larger tree than the more familiar Arbutus unedo.
- Height: up to 8 m (26 ft)
- Spread: 8 m (26 ft)
- Notes: Arbutus 'Marina' initially can grow with a branching, spreading habit in the UK but can be trained to produce an upright stem over time if required.
